The Jeep Wrangler has a rich and fascinating history stretching back over 80 years. Its root can be traced to the Willys-MB, a rugged military SUV developed for the US Army during World War II. Since then, the Jeep Wrangler received many updates and has grown to become one of the most loved and easily recognizable SUVs on the road. Read on as our team at Victor Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram explores how the Jeep Wrangler has changed over the years.
The first SUV to bear the Wrangler name, the YJ, was produced in 1987. It replaces the civilian version of the Willys-MB that sold over 1.5 million units. While the YJ was similar to its predecessors in many ways, it comes with distinctive rectangular headlights hated by many Jeep fans. Under the hood, the YJ offers a choice of two engines, including a 2.5-liter inline-four and a 4.2-liter inline-six.
The Jeep Wrangler TJ was introduced in 1996. In this generation, Jeep brought back the classic round headlights that were absent in the previous model. The TJ also featured a new coil-spring suspension system, which improved the SUV’s on-road comfort and off-road capability. However, it retained the same engine options as the YJ. In 2004, Jeep unveiled the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited, a long-wheelbase version of the TJ with only two doors.
Released in 2006, the JK was the first genuinely modern Jeep Wrangler. This generation brought a lot of significant changes to the Wrangler. The SUV’s interior was upgraded with better-quality materials and plenty of comfort amenities. Jeep also introduced new powertrain options, like the 3.6 liter Pentastar V6 and a four-door version of Wrangler Unlimited.
The JL is the current generation of the Jeep Wrangler. It was unveiled in 2017 for the 2018 model year. The Jeep Wrangler JL offers more powerful and efficient engines, including a turbocharged four-cylinder and the EcoDiesel engine. The JL was designed to be more modern, refined, and comfortable for daily use.
